The promotional brochure and ticket order form mentioned that there are:

"Hundreds of acres to roam on...

Walk around for three days and nights

Without seeing a skyscraper or traffic light...fly a kite, sun yourself.

Cook your own food and breathe unspolied air."

WOODSTOCK MUSIC & ART FAIR

August 15, 16, & 17-1969

Bethel, New York

"The event marked the peak of the flower power/ hippie movement.

Prior to Woodstock, there had never been a concert with 70,000 people, much less 500.000.

Originally planned to accomodate about 100,000 people, organizers did their best to deal with the growing horde.

But it was the horde itself, along with a few groups, like the Hog Farm

and the Merry Ptanksters who kept things under control.

There were few if any policeman on the site, and surprisingly, they weren't needed!!!

There was no violence either at the festival or in the surrounding communities. No burglaries either.

The worst crime seemed to be trespassing, which most people did to get to and from the site."

"In 1969, Lisa Law and eighty-five experienced commune organizers were asked to assist with the medical tents, security, food services, stage activities, and information booths at a music festival near Woodstock, New York. Seven months pregnant, with a toddler in hand, Law managed to take photographs of the festival, help run a free kitchen, and film an hour of home movies. She captured images of an event that remains one of the most powerful symbols of the decade."

WOODSTOCK
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
by Joni Mitchel

Well I came across a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him tell where are you going
This he told me
Well I am going down to Yasgur's farm
Going to join in a rock and roll band
Goin' to get back to the land to set my soul free
We are stardust, we are golden
We are 2 billion year old carbon
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden
Well then can I walk beside you
I have come to lose the smog
And I feel like I'm a cog in something turning
And maybe it's the time of year
Yes and maybe it's the time of man
And I don't know who I am
But life is for learning
We are stardust, we are golden
We are 2 billion year old carbon
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden
By the time we got to Woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere there was song and celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bombers jet planes
Riding shotgun in the sky
Turning into butterflies
Above our nation.
We are stardust, we are golden
We are 2 billion year old carbon
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.

"Woodstock like the 60s themselves, can never be repeated again.

Atempts to capture the spirit and feeling fall short,

leaving us to wonder just what it was about this event and the people involved that made it special."
