Although the wind chime has existed from prehistoric times in many cultures,
it received its most elegant and prolific development in east and south Asia,
from Bali to Tibet and Japan, where it was often elaborately decorated, cast, or carved
and was hung from the eaves of sacred structures.

Buddhists especially made use of wind chimes and wind bells,
attaching them profusely by the hundreds or even thousands
to the eaves of temples, shrines, and pagodas,
causing during breezy moments an almost overwhelming auspicious sensation of sound.

In China and Japan they became a decorative art in private homes as well as on sacred structures,
and in the 19th and 20th centuries their popular use spread more widely among Western countries. 

Today, we are bridging the worlds of ancient and modern times,
the wisdom of the East has spread to the West and has been met with enthusiasm and intrigue.

'Windchimes by Davis'

Davis began making wind chimes in 1980 as garden accessories for his cabin in the woods, and as an enchantment for his newborn son, Cedar. They became a hit. The process of developing a 'soothing' wind chime has involved the study of the origins of music as well as music theory and composition. (In addition, Davis holds an occupational certificate in audio engineering, plays guitar, composes and arranges songs.)

From simple scales to different chordal structures, he has continued to experiment with musical ideas to discover those elusive notes of rapture. This includes the materials of construction and the design of the wind chime itself to extract the potential of the music contained within. Davis has handcrafted each wind chime personally in his home studio, and has satisfied customers since 1980.

MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION:
Each DAVIS WINDCHIME features 8 distinct notes in a chordal composition. Its design elicits the full potential of the music contained within the zinc coated steel tubes. The supporting pieces are molded from a very durable UV resistant ABS resin. Outlasting wood, it will not warp or crack when exposed to the weather. The clapper strikes the tubes midpoints for a bright crystalline resonance. The aerodynamic windcatcher rides the wind like a box kite for most effective response. Internal suspension of the tubes decreases wear of the cord, increases action, and creates a sleek appearance. It is assembled with a tough 300 pound test, UV resistant, braided nylon cord. Most quality musical wind chimes use 6 tubes or less tuned to a simple scale of one octave. I use 8 tubes tuned to a chord and melody over a 1 1/2 octave range. The resulting music is more interesting and expressive, besides providing 33.33% more tubes and 39600 more possible combinations (8 factorial minus 6 factorial). The competition is generally about twice my price, but factoring in the difference of the number of tubes makes it really about 2 1/2 times my price.
