'Iris' by Bob ThornburgA Brief Herstory of Aromatherapy
Today amid the flurry of natural healing methods that have grown up as alternative or complementary to orthodox medicine, the use of Essential Oils distilled from flowers as well as herbs, trees and bushes is enormously popular.
With origins dating back 5000 years, Aromatherapy is truly one of the oldest methods of holistic healing. Ancient men and women quickly discovered methods to treat ailments through herbs and aromatics. Aromatherapy, as it is practiced today, began with the Egyptians, who used the method of infusion to extract oils from aromatic plants which were used for medicinal and cosmetic purposes as well as embalming.
At a similar time, ancient Chinese civilizations were also using some form of aromatics. Shen Nung¥s herbal book (dating back approximately 2700 B.C.E.) contains detailed information on over 300 plants and their uses.
The Chinese used aromatics in religious ceremonies, by burning woods and incense to show respect to their Gods and Goddesses-a tradition which is still practiced today. The use of aromatics in China was linked to other ancient therapies such as massage, acupressure and acupuncture.
Aromatherapy has also been used for many centuries in India. Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of India, uses dried and fresh herbs, as well as aromatic massage as important aspects of treatment.
The Greeks acquired most of their medical knowledge from the Egyptians and used it to further their own discoveries. They found that the fragrance of some flowers was stimulating while others had relaxing properties. The use of olive oil as the base oil absorbed the aroma from the herbs or flowers and the perfumed oil was used both for cosmetic and medicinal purposes.
The Romans loved aromatic oils, favoring rose above all for winemaking, perfumes and their famous baths. When the fashion for bathing died out or when water was short, aromatic oils would be applied to skin and clothes to mask unpleasant smells.
Fragrant oils have long been associated with healing, too. From Hippocrates onwards we know that aromatic baths, massages and inhalations have been employed to remedy all kinds of health problems.
The practice of Aromatherapy as it exists today, using essential oils with massage for health and well-being, was popularized by an Austrian biochemist, Marguerite Maury, who was married to a homeopathic doctor. She viewed the use of oils in a holistic way, using them to address many underlying emotional and mental imbalances. Massage gives the benefit of the comfort of touch, which is of great therapeutic value, as well as the great versatility of the effects of Essential Oils.
