Altars & Sacred Space

"The urge to create sacred spaces is so deep in the human psyche that,
even when there is no formalized intent to make an altar, we often create them subconsciously.

An altar can be a beautiful and powerful companion to your spiritual work,
intensifying your experiences, accelerating your progress and increasing your enjoyment,
while helping you focus your intentions.

I make altars everywhere--inside and outside!-LH-

"Checking a dictionary will tell us of tables where sacred objects
are placed or platforms that we face while worshipping.

We know that an altar is a blessed place,
often a part of a particular religion with its own rules and belief systems.
We know that altars can be powerful centers of energy for ceremony and ritual.

A traditional religious altar may serve a congregation or a household.
At the heart of this service is each individual's experience of the Great Mystery
through the symbols that are presented by the altar.

Every encounter with an altar is in essence a highly personal encounter, unlike any other,
a two-way flow of spirit between the individual and that person's experience of the Divine.

As we sit before our personal altars, we enter into a relationship with a magical portal in time and space
where the most powerful aspects of ourselves are revealed and where we gain greater understanding of our places in the universe.

When we choose to create a personal altar,
we are making a commitment to bring our spiritual search home,
to ground our journey in the mundane aspects of our lives,
to place right under our noses a positive daily reminder of our spiritual quest.

How will you utilize your altar?

That will depend on your relationship with your altar.
If you do a daily prayer or meditation, your altar could be created especially for this practice.

Those of us who are into angels will arrange and dedicate our altars
to our work with these heavenly guides.

Perhaps you seek guidance through oracles such as Tarot cards or the Runes or I-Ching.
Establish your altar as a sacred home for these tools.

Aromatherapy?
What could be lovelier than a concentrated arrangement of these Sweet Oils?

If you channel allies,
you will find your personal altar to be a powerful ground
for working with energy and bringing new understanding into your awareness.

Your altar is where you will place images of your Spiritual Teachers,
your ancestors, your loved ones, a picture of your inner child.

Consider creating an altar specifically for dreamwork or for healing a trauma.

Many of us are artists; if so, let your art be present on your altar.

Altars for Healing
Use your altar as an immediate place to go for healing
when you are angry, sad or depressed.
And remember that an altar is also a place to give back,
a place to express gratitude.
Make offerings of flowers, seashells, fruits, etc.
Place gifts on your altar for awhile before passing them on.
Bless your new jewelry.
Write notes to your Higher Self.
Whatever your inner work may be,
you will find your altar becoming a reflection of your heart chakra,
balancing the energies of the practical and the sublime.

Create altars that honor new relationships, births, deaths, and other rites of passage.

What objects will you place on your altar?

The things on your altar are very personal and have powerful meaning just for you;
special items that evoke deep feelings of joy and connection to your Highest Self, to your spirit.

Many people design their altars on traditional understandings,
such as the Seven directions and elements of the Medicine Wheels
the five points of the Wiccan Pentagram, or for Sacred Sexuality-Tantra.

These systems carry with them specific beliefs about how the universe works and our place in it.

It is not necessary, however, to follow a traditional way.
Let the energy of your altar be free.
Let it breathe.
All of our spiritual paths are valid,
and your path will be the one that manifests itself in beauty on your altar top.

How will you create sacredness?

You may wish to consecrate your altar when you first create it
or whenever you begin a new cycle.

This is done with your intention.

You might say a prayer, asking for a blessing for this altar.

You may wish to speak aloud,
dedicating this altar to a particular issue you are working on,
remembering that there is power in speaking aloud.

Call on your helper spirits,
your spiritual teachers,
and on the Highest Power of Good that you know.
Let them know what's going on in your life and what you want.
Knowing what you want is half the journey.
Keep your altar fresh and clean and always treat it as a sacred space.

A personal altar may be just what you've been looking for,
a quiet place of inspiration, your touchstone.

Place all the loose ends of your life there and see what happens.

Sit before your altar and listen to your spirit.
It is our spirits that long for altars,
that sing and dance, pray, weep and dream.
You may find that your altar has magical powers."

Meditation Tapes

Through the years I have found that being born into the West this lifetime,
I am constantly bombarded and oftentimes influenced by the chaos, intense stress, and unmindful vibrations of those around us.

The East has brought us many teachers, sages, masters and saints from which to draw from a deep well of wisdom and knowledge.
It is difficult, without the training from birth, to create a sacred space in which to quiet your mind and withdraw from the constant clamor outside.

There are as many techniques and teachings as there are souls on this Planet.
In the 'seeking' you will arrive at your special resonant pathway.

These are just a few tapes-below- we have found to be helpful on our path.
Music is also a soothing friend in our sacred spaces and altars.

.please visit our New Age/Mystical Music Store for some suggestions.

Nature can be the safest and easiest place to find this quiet and solitude.....tis our first choice.

You can be Pagan, Eclectic Pagan, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim or Xian
to benefit from these tapes..it is all a Spiritual Garden.

Teachings on Love:
How Mindfulness Can Enhance Your Intimate Relationships
by Thich Nhat Hanh

For venerated Vietnamese Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, love is more than an emotion.
Drawing on millennia of Buddhist wisdom and his own therapeutic methods,
Teachings on Love further develops his practical notion of interbeing in terms of love.

If all th ings are interrelated,
what could be more paramount to negotiating those relations than love?

And more than just a way of relating, love is a way of living:
"Love by the way you walk, the way you sit, the way you eat."

Nhat Hanh supports his practical advice with numerous verses
for enhancing mindfulness, prostrations for expressing reverence, and succinct formulas,
such as the Five Awarenesses and the Five Mindfulness Trainings.

The fifth mindfulness training exemplifies the broad scope of Nhat Hanh's love:

"Aware of the suffering caused by unmindful consumption,
I am committed to cultivating good health, both physical and mental,
for myself, my family, and my society
by practicing mindful eating, drinking, and consuming."

Experience Yoga Nidra:
Guided Deep Relaxation
by Swami Janakananda Saraswati

Relaxation is a state. It is best achieved by using a technique that triggers it.
During relaxation the blood pressure is normalized,
the immune system is strengthened and the brain relaxes.
All the organs and senses of the body are rested in a way that sleep seldom provides.
Thus the senses are sharpened and you feel invigorated afterwards.

During Yoga Nidra the relaxation is constantly deepened
while you follow the instructions and devote yourself to the experience.
The body starts to relax and the mind follows.
When the mind relaxes, the relaxation of the body is further deepened.

This interaction between body, mind, emotions and psychic energy, is fundamental to yoga.
It is a process that is brought about by Yoga Nidra.
The Yoga Nidra technique is constructed in such a way
that it constantly maintains and develops the relaxation process at all levels of consciousness.

The more familiar you become with Yoga Nidra, the easier it is to relax.

As you come to know harmony, you are soon able to recall it instantly, when you need it – in the middle of daily activities.
Yoga Nidra is much more than a deep relaxation, it is a total experience that touches and awakens all parts of your being.
– And all you do is to lie completely still on your back with closed eyes, and follow the instructions.
Swami Janakananda, Scandinavian Yoga and Meditation School

Two genuine relaxation methods from the Nyasa Tantra, 20 minutes and 45 minutes - and music.
20 page information booklet included.
Swami Janakananda guides you into a deep relaxation of body and mind.
He also uses the tantric mantras and visual symbols to awaken and harmonize the chakras.
With a background of nature sounds and music.
Roop Verma, on sitar, is the first musician to record the chakras' ancient music symbols.
