Rebellion and Celebration

"If hippie was a religion, it's primary ritual was the psychedelic rock concert.

These were not so different from the rituals of many sacred traditions:
for centuries people have ingested psychoactive plant substances and then danced in trance to loud music.
The hippies were intuitively following this time-honored method of escaping ordinary reality and contacting a different one.

Beginning at the Avalon and Fillmore ballrooms in San Francisco,
the psychedelic rock concerts provided a setting for visionary journeying, or "tripping."

In the rock show you were in a vibrating universe,
an aural space that drove everything out of your mind except the moment.
All boundaries and distinctions of oneness, as real as any that happened to any mystic who ever lived.

We were part of a new culture, a new world dawning:
we were a force to be reckoned with.

"We hope you will enjoy the show....."

Welcome to a 60s & 70s Music Realm

This has been a huge project for me..taking about 1 year and half so far.
I have finally realized this Solstice-the project is sim ply too vast..
There are sites that have already accomplished this and I will list them for you.

However, I would like to showcase my favorite bands and musicians, and
my favorite album's of theirs-which in itself-will be a labor of Love.

There will be no more decades like 60s & 70s-ever.
So let's preserve what we can of our culture.
I am committed to creating this, in some small way, here at 60s & Further.

I am using AmazonDOTcom for my primary source.
You you can always click on the albums to hear cuts and then
hit your back button to return here.

Enjoy the Journey'

"There has never been a decade quite like the 60s;
the diversity, conflicts, hope, anger, the music, the dance crazes and the fun
that characterized these years are captured here.
The 60s decade was a decade of change.
Not only were those changes evident in fashions but world events,
music of the 60s, and individual self expression as displayed
during the largest outdoor rock concert ever performed, Woodstock. "

Psychedelic 60s-Rock Music
University of Virginia
ROCK MUSIC BECAME the most important medium for defining and coalescing the new hippie aesthetic,
and the style that emerged with the brilliant, swirling colors and hallucinogenic imagery was called psychedelic.
Bob Dylan showed how meaningful songs with surrealist imagery could be wedded to popular music.
Though he was one of the few artists who did not jump on the psychedelic bandwagon,
his then revolutionary efforts inspired countless bands who did.
The first psychedelic bands came from San Francisco:
the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company and others.........

"Okay, so you like 60s rock. But do you know anything about the inspiration for all that great music?
It's worth noting that many of the artists who've become known
as rockers didn't call the music they played rock 'n' roll,
considering themselves either Chicago-style blues musicians (Eric Clapton),
Rhythm & Blues artists (The Beatles) or both (The Rolling Stones)........."

blues to create blues-rock and with jazz, to create jazz-rock fusion,
and without a time signature to create psychedelic rock.

GROUPIES

A groupie is a person who, while he/she may be a fan at some level,
seeks intimacy (most often physical, sometimes emotional) with a famous person.

Groupie is derived from group, meaning a musical band, but now has more general application.
The term "groupie" is often used derogatorily.

Female groupies in particular are known for a long-standing tradition of being available
for sexual intercourse with celebrities, rock stars, professional athletes, politicians, and other public figures
regardless of the fact that the objects of their obsession may already be married, have children, or otherwise already in a committed relationship.

There are other male dominated professions and occupations that appear to attract groupies as well,
such as law enforcement and firefighters (especially after 9/11),
the military (these women are sometimes referred to as "Allotment Annies",
"debs", "badge bunnies", camp followers, or EIB's [Everyone In the Barracks]),
preachers and ministers. Even convicted criminals sometimes have followers – see hybristophilia.

In the book Hammer of the Gods (Stephen Davis, 1985),
Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant is quoted making a distinction between fans
who wanted a brief sexual encounter with a musician,
and "groupies" who adopted a musician for the duration of the tour,
acting as a surrogate girlfriend or mother, often taking care of the musician's valuables, drugs, wardrobe, and social life.

The GTOs (Girls Together Outrageously) who were associated with Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention
and other late 60s and 70s stars, are probably the best known groupies of this type.

Motives of Groupies

While perhaps only a small number of groupies are truly promiscuous in that they are willing to
trade sexual favors for attention (and often expensive gifts),
the tradition of "rock and roll groupies" continues to the present day,
contributing to the image of the rock-and-roll lifestyle as one where sex and drugs are readily available at any time.

The techniques used by groupies to get close to their targets vary almost as much as the groupies themselves.
Certainly, female groupies can wear clothing that highlights their physical attributes—or remove clothing, for that matter.
Sometimes their availability and dogged persistence at pursuing their lust object are enough.

Some groupies go so far as to create an imaginary world wherein they would be
the replacements for their targets’ primary relationships (marrying them, or at least becoming their "road wife"),
with some making themselves available to any famous celebrity (any rock band that rolls into town),
while others focus closely on one particular target (and becoming a "regular").
