FREE LOVE

The term free love first appeared in the mid-nineteenth century in the United States,
where it described a movement that rejected state and church interference in personal relationships.
While the phrase is often associated today with promiscuity,
free love movements have historically been more interested in personal freedom
than advocating multiple sexual partners; as such, they are also unrelated to institutionalised polygamy.

A notable free love proponent was the feminist Victoria Woodhull,
who became the first woman to run for presidency in the U.S. in 1872.
The year before, she wrote:
"Yes, I am a Free Lover. I have an inalienable,
constitutional and natural right to love whom I may,
to love as long or as short a period as I can;
to change that love every day if I please,
and with that right neither you nor any law you can frame have any right to interfere.
And I have the further right to demand a free and unrestricted exercise of that right,
and it is your duty not only to accord it, but, as a community, to see that I am protected in it.
I trust that I am fully understood, for I mean just that, and nothing less!"
And the Truth Shall Make You Free

(November 20, 1871)

Anarchist free love movements continued into early 1900s in bohemian circles
in New York's Greenwich Village, Paris's Montmartre and Montparnasse and Berlin.

Notable free love advocates in Greenwich Village included Emma Goldman and Edna St. Vincent Millay,
and free love was an accepted part of the culture of their Greenwich Village associates
Max Eastman, Crystal Eastman, Floyd Dell, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Ida Rauh, Hutchins Hapgood and Neith Boyce.

Free love ideals emerged in hippie culture in the 1960s and 1970s,
typified by the Summer of love in 1968.

As of the 1980s, concerns over AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases
had greatly diminished the popularity of the free love ideology.
To some extent it has been succeeded by polyamory,
which has many similarities to free love but is more likely
to associate sex with an ongoing relationship.

A more general term is sexual freedom,
as opposed to sexual oppression.

Hippie Goddess features a vibrant, living, evolving, alternative community.
It is not a recreation of the 60's.
You wont see girls dressed up in props from 40 years ago.
What you will see is natural, alternative lifestyle earthmamas
expressing spirituality, sensuality, sexuality and individuality through nude imagery.
Unlike many natural beauty sites, you may find some tatoos, piercings, and even a few tribal cuttings.
You will also find many Hippie Goddesses with little or none of these things.
This is beacuse we are photographing real people in the alternative community.
We are not hiding or minimizing who they are, instead we are reveling in it.

Poem
by John Ray

Debate and striving do not exist
Feverish anxiety, ratiocination and ardour, Do not exist

Things exist
Green leaves,Yellow flowers,Grey stones,Mottled bitumen
Old sticks,Dry leaves,The loving sun,Breeze in the trees
Patterns in tiled steps,Galvanized iron sheds,And tired old fences

Today we exist
The winds blow and the smoke rises
The river flows and children laugh
Being is its own reason.

Exhiles from Delight

We, unaccustomed to courage
exiles from delight
live coiled in shells of loneliness
until love leaves its high holy temple
and comes into our sight
to liberate us into life.

Love arrives
and in its train come ecstasies
old memories of pleasure
ancient histories of pain.
Yet if we are bold,
love strikes away the chains of fear
from our souls.

We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love's light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.

"Maybe a guy could fall instantly in love, but I doubt it.
I think love creeps over you like a warm feeling on a clear blue fall day.
This person is in your thoughts most of the time-all of the time actually.
You see her when you close your eyes, when you look off into the distance,
when you pause from what you are doing and take adeep breath.
You remember how her fingers felt when they touched you.
The loved one becomes a part of you, the most important part.
At least it is that way with me when I think of you."
